How LawGuru uses your details.
What the Protection of Personal Information Act asks us to tell you, in plain words. Last updated on 31 October 2026 (version lawguru-2026-10-31d).
Who we are
LawGuru ("we") runs this website and is responsible for the details you send through its forms. To reach us, or to ask what we hold about you, use the contact page: you only need to tick that you have read this notice.
What we collect
Only what you type into a form: your name, email address and phone number, your organisation or firm, and what you tell us (for attorneys and advocates, also where you practise, your Legal Practice Council number, your years in practice and the work you do). This website sets no cookies, uses no tracking or advertising tools, and keeps no log of visits. To stop abuse, the internet address a form is sent from is kept only in the server's working memory, never on disk: for up to a day to count the forms sent from it, and in the web server's count of requests until newer visits take its place or the server restarts. Only if something on the server itself goes wrong may its record of the fault include the internet address of the request that met it; such records are deleted within 15 days.
Why
To answer you: to consider an application to the panel, to talk with your organisation about what it needs, to show you the software, or to answer your question. We do not sell your details or use them for anything else.
When you ask for legal help
The "tell us what happened" page, when it opens, is not a LawGuru form: it belongs to a firm of attorneys on the panel, and that firm's own privacy notice, shown on its page, applies to what you tell it.
Where your details are kept, and who sees them
On our servers with a hosting company in the European Union (Germany), whose data-protection law gives protection at least equal to South Africa's. Your details are stored encrypted, and only LawGuru's own team can open them.
How long
Up to two years after you send them, unless you become a panel member or client of ours and we agree otherwise; forms that are plainly spam are deleted after 30 days. Our encrypted backups keep copies for up to seven weeks longer.
Your rights
You may ask us what details we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete them, or object to their use, through the contact page. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may complain to the Information Regulator (www.inforegulator.org.za).
